If you have a sprinkler system, at some point, you’ll need to find lawn sprinkler repair near you to help you fix your sprinkler. A lawn sprinkler service can also perform routine and seasonal maintenance on your sprinkler system to help prevent needing repairs as much as possible.

What is involved with lawn sprinkler maintenance?

For routine maintenance of your lawn sprinkler, there are a few recommendations from manufacturers and lawn sprinkler companies.

Clean and adjust the sprinkler heads

It’s important to clean sprinkler heads to be sure they don’t get clogged with dirt. This helps make sure the entire system runs smoothly. It’s a good idea to do this once per year, or have your sprinkler company do it for you.

The sprinkler service can also make sure all the sprinkler heads are at the right angle and functioning properly at the right angle. If any heads are missing or broken, they can be replaced.

Winterize the sprinkler system

Sprinkler system winterization needs to be done before the first hard freeze to prevent damage being done to your system. (See below for what can happen if your sprinkler system winterizing is not done in time.)

Open the sprinkler system in spring

Once freezing temperatures are finished for the winter, it’s time to turn on the sprinkler system in the spring and inspect it to make sure it’s ready to begin irrigating your yard again. The sprinkler service will check the water pressure and electrical components and can often even help you with setting your watering schedule if needed.

What happens if you don’t winterize your sprinkler system in South Carolina?

If you live in a region of the country where temperatures dip below freezing for very long, winterizing your sprinkler system is a must. Even though we live in South Carolina, we do get some days that are cold enough each winter to cause a big mess for your irrigation system if it still has water in it.

If you don’t drain the lines or blow out the water from your sprinkler system pipes before a hard freeze, the pipes or sprinkler heads can burst. Needless to say, it is going to cost you some extra hard-earned money to repair the broken sprinkler system after such a catastrophic event.

Generally, a reliable lawn sprinkler company near you can winterize your yard sprinkler system in the fall and check on it and make sure it is working properly again in the spring. It usually doesn’t take long to do this for you.

Winterize sprinkler system cost

Winterizing a sprinkler system generally costs in the range of $60-$120 (unless you have a very large system, then it may be more expensive). But that is a fraction of what you will spend to have your sprinkler system repaired if water freezes and bursts a pipe or sprinkler head.

What kinds of yard sprinkler repair could be needed?

There are several things in your sprinkler system that could need repairs now and then. We’ll go over some of the main irrigation system problems you may encounter that would require repairing here.

Change/replace the leaking sprinkler heads

Leaky sprinkler heads are a big concern. If your sprinkler heads are leaking, it’s time to look into yard sprinkler repair so that you don’t waste money on your utility bills and don’t overwater some areas and cause susceptibility to mildew or disease.

Replace the valves on the backflow device

Sometimes, low or high water pressure can be an indication that the sprinkler valves are not working properly and may need to be replaced.

A defective solenoid has a stuck valve that will either cause your sprinkler system water to back up and then rupture the pipes or it will leave water constantly flowing.

Fix leaking or busted sprinkler pipes

Another concern is the pipes in your system. If a pipe bursts, is damaged by tree roots, or is hit by a shovel, you’ll have a huge amount of water being lost. And if you are on city water, you’ll pay for all of it on your utility bill.

Also, it can create a ponding or flooding situation that is not good for your plants or anything around your property.

A broken pipe needs to be replaced right away. And even a small leak should be repaired quickly to avoid wasting water.

Replace any damaged electrical components of your irrigation system

It’s also a good idea to check on the electrical parts, valves, and other operational components just to be sure that everything is working well.

If wires become damaged or corroded, that zone won’t turn on for you. If you find your sprinkler system is not working properly, a lawn sprinkler technician can check the voltage and find the problem and replace any broken parts.

Another electrical component in the system is the transformer. The lawn care technician can also check to see what the voltage reading is for that part and replace it if it isn’t working well.

If the circuitry in the solenoid is damaged, it may also need to be replaced.

It’s best to leave electrical work to the professionals if you are not familiar with it. Especially when there is water nearby. Water and live electrical wires aren’t a good mix and can be quite dangerous for DIYers.
